Bill is a lecturer in the Health and Human Sciences (HHS) department at the University of Essex. The module he lectures on has students at both Colchester and Southend campuses. He is based at Colchester and has therefore been investigating ways in which he could still deliver his lecture such that the students get an equally good learning experience whilst saving his time and financial costs of having to visit Southend to give a separate lecture. Additionally he does not want to segregate the Southend-based students and wants a method whereby the students have greater flexibility to attend the lecture. To this end he is trialling the new Mixed Reality Teaching and Learning Environment (MiRTLE) that has been developed by the Institute for Social and Technical Research (ISTR) using Sun’s Wonderland platform.
On the day of the lecture Bill enters the physical lecture room and logs into MiRTLE using the Movie Recorder client. This special avatar is inserted into the world in the hallway of the Health & Human Sciences building. He positions his avatar in the virtual the classroom where he sees two windows at the front of the classroom. The left window shows a live video feed from the classroom into the virtual world. The right screen is a PDF Viewer that Bill will use to display his slides. He positions his ‘camera’ avatar to provide a good view of the slides. He selects the PDF Viewer by holding down the Shift key and clicking on the border of the PDF Viewer with the left mouse button. He then selects the slides he wishes to display by using CTRL+o and entering the URL for their location. From the View menu he deselects ‘Show Camera’ so that the avatar cannot be seen by the students.
Bill goes to the back of the classroom where another PC is located. Once again he logs in using the Movie Recorder client and positions his avatar in the classroom. On this occasion though he positions the ‘camera avatar at the front of the room near the front wall looking back at the virtual students. This view is displayed on the plasma panel at the back of the room and hence allows Bill to view the virtual students whilst his lecture is in progress.
Once the students have arrived in both the physical and virtual rooms he starts the lecture. He uses the PageDown and Page Up keys on his PC to move the slides in the PDF Viewer and back again. While the lecture progresses he can see all the students with those logged in to the virtual world being represented via avatars that have their name above them.
During the lecture he sees one of the virtual students raise their hand to ask a question. He is able to speak directly to the student concerned and deal with the question just as he would in the real world. 展开
