Tuckman’s model of group development is described as five stages (Lee, 2010). It provided a framework for understanding a process of team development. The first stage is forming as an “ice breaking” stage. The introduction around group members tries to evaluate others. I had a difficult experience in this stage. In “A” tutorial, classmates attempted to contact with others and introduced themselves for forming a group. But I felt it hard to find a classmate because of the problem of cultural identity and communication. Also, many classmates came from European countries. They speak so fast to be understood. Next stage is storming, is characterized by conflict around group members. Individuals begin to argue with each others. The next stage is Norming, “members come together and begin feel a sense of belonging” (Stewart, Manz & Sims, 1999, p84). Another experience is related to this stage. Few weeks ago, I found a group whose members stayed and contacted with them regularly in “A” tutorial. I began to develop a sense of belonging and a better understanding of task. Moreover, we shared information each other to better understand the topic. The next stage is performing. Roles and rules are followed in order to achieving goals. The final stage is adjourning, which allows members to break up because of work done.
Stewart, Manz & Sims (1999) stated that the effect of an active and democratic manager can be positively related to team performance because they provide a better guidance and try to delegate, encourage, reinforce, and cooperate with workers to achieve team’s goal (p103). 展开
