1.I have been trying to get my new room in order.我试图把我的新房间收拾整齐。
(1)与课文开头那句话的后半部分一样,这个句子也用了现在完成进行时。(cf.本课语法)
(2)get…in order表in“把……整理好”,in order的含义之一为“整齐”、“井然有序”:
Get/Put everything in order before you leave the room.
离开房间前把所有的东西都整理好。
2.To make matters worse, the room is rather small…更糟糕的是房间还非常小……
to make matters worse是个插入语,与主句之间要用逗号隔开。
matters(复数形式)可以表示“事态”、“情况”。这个短语是个惯用语:
I lost my way in the forest, and to make matters worse, it became dark.
我在森林里迷了路。更糟糕的是,天开始黑了。
3.At the moment, they cover every inch of floor space and I actually have to walk on them to get in or out of the room.这会儿,书把地板的每一点空隙都占据了,我实际上是踩着这些书进出房间的。
(1)at the moment表示“此刻”、“目前”:
At the moment, I'm busy preparing for the exams.
目前我正忙着准备考试。
(2)to get…为表示目的的不定式短语,相当于一个从句。
4.You can sit here in your spare time and read the carpet!空闲时你可以坐在这儿读地毯!
spare可以表示“空闲的”、“多余的”:
I like to read in my spare time.

1.At last firemen have put out a big forest fire in California.消防队员们终于扑灭了加利福尼亚的一场森林大火。
(1)at last(终于,到底)表示经过一番努力之后。
(2)put out可以表示“扑灭”、“熄灭”、“关掉”等含义:
Please put the light/ fire out.
请把灯关掉/把火灭掉。
(3)forest虽然是名词,但在句中起形容词的作用,修饰fire。
2.…they have been trying to find out how the fire began.……他们一直试图找出起火的原因。
(1)短语动词find out表示经过研究、努力等“发现”、“找出”、“查出”:
I'll try and find out the name of the person who saved my life yesterday.
我将设法查出昨天救我命的那个人的姓名。
(2)how the fire began是find out的宾语,它是一个由疑问词how引导的名词从句。
3.They were also quite sure that a cigarette end did not start the fire.他们还十分肯定火灾也不是由烟头引起的。
(1)start作及物动词时可以表示“使……发生”、“引起”。
(2)be sure后面跟的是名词从句。that引导的这个名词从句也可以写成that the fire was not started by a cigarette end。但这里强调的是引起火灾的原因(不是碎玻璃或烟头),所以用烟头作主语。
4.…a fireman accidentally discovered the cause.……一个消防队员偶然发现了起火的原因。
discover本身含有偶然发现(某个已经存在的东西)的含义:
I don't know who discovered America.
我不知道谁发现美洲的。
在discover前面加上accidentally更加强了“偶然”、“意外”的含义。
5.He noticed the remains of a snake which was wound round the electric wires of a 16,000-volt power line.他发现了缠绕在16,000伏高压线上的一条死蛇。
(1)the remains表示“尸体”、“残骸”,必须用复数形式:
The villagers were surprised to see the remains of an aeroplane near the lake.
村民们惊讶地发现湖边有一架飞机的残骸。
(2)wound为wind的过去分词。wind在这里不表示“蜿蜒”,而表示“卷在……上”、“缠绕”,常与around/round连用:
Did you wind this piece of wire round the tree?
是你把这根铁丝缠在树上的吗?
(3)wire指具体的电线、铁丝等,line在这里指“线路”,含义比wire广。
6.When it did so…当它这样做时……
so常用于一些动词之后,代指前面提过的某个动作/某件事,以免重复:
Has Susan got into university?
苏珊上大学了吗?
I believe/think so.

1.The children were at school, my husband was at work…孩子们在上学,我丈夫在上班……
school和work前都没加冠词,因为不是指具体那个学校或具体干什么工作,只是泛指他们在干什么。
2.at exactly that moment, 恰恰在此时。
exactly用于加强语气,表示“正”、“恰恰”:
That's exactly what I wanted to tell you.
那正是我想要告诉你的。
3.Nothing could have been more annoying.没有什么能比这更烦人了。
用这个句型可以表达许多感情,换一下最后的形容词即可:
Nothing could have been more exciting/ interesting/ embarrassing.
没有什么能比这更激动人心/有趣/令人尴尬的了。
4.It took me ten minutes to persuade her to ring back later. 我用了10分钟的时间才说服她过会儿再来电话。
(1)it为先行主语,代指to persuade引导的不定式短语。
(2)表示说服某人做某事时,可以用persuade+sb.+to do sth.这个结构:
I persuaded him to give up that plan.
我劝他放弃那项计划。也可以用persuade+sb. +into doing sth. 这个结构:
I persuaded him into giving up that plan.

(3)later可以表示“过后”、“以后”:
Ten minutes later, the bus arrived.
10分钟以后,公共汽车来了。
Please come back later(on).
请过会儿再来。
5.What a mess! 真是糟糕透了!
在口语中,a mess可以用来指“困境”、“窘境”、“一团糟”等含义:
I made a mess of my exam.
我考试考得一团糟。
Make some jam if you want to, but don't make a mess in the kitchen.
你如果愿意就做些果酱,不过别把厨房弄得一团糟。
6.I had no sooner got back to the kitchen than the doorbell rang loud enough to wake the dead.我刚回到厨房,门铃又响了起来,响声足以把死人唤醒。
(1)连词no sooner…than…(刚……就……)用于过去完成时。(cf.第38课语法)
(2)enough作副词用在形容词或副词之后,有“足以……”的含义:
The water in the pool is warm enough (to swim in).
池里的水够暖和的(,可以游泳)。
