一名男子试图抓猴子去卖给动物园。但是，猴子很聪明，他设的各种陷阱都失败。
一个小男孩看着那人徒劳无功，就拿一个细瓶颈的壶，再把少量花生米洒在壶的周围，把大量的花生米放在壶里。然后，他把壶缚在一棵树上，他告诉该男子说：「我们该在几个小时内就抓到猴子。」
一些猴子很快就找到了花生米和壶。一只将手伸入壶内，很容易就拿到一把花生米，但他不能把手连花生米一并拉出壶颈。猴子很生气，叫喊起来。其他猴子想助他一把也不能成功把他的手拉出壶颈。
男孩和男人听到响声就前来。由于男孩拿着一个袋子，来到附近时，其他猴子都跑光了，除了手被卡在壶里的一只。男孩把猴子连壶一拼塞入袋中。该名男子很惊讶，问他少年猎猴陷阱的秘密。 「为什么猴子的手这么容易伸进壶里，但这么难掏出来？」

原文如下：

A man tried to catch monkeys to sell them to zoos. The monkeys, however, were very clever and every kind of trap that he set failed.
A young boy watched the man’s efforts and then took a pot with a narrow neck. He placed a few peanuts around the pot and put lots of peanuts in it. He then tied the pot to a tree and he told the man, “We should have a monkey in a few hours.”
Some monkeys soon found the peanuts and the pot. One put his hand into the pot easily and got a handful of peanuts, but he couldn’t pull his hand with peanuts out of the narrow neck of the pot. The monkey was angry and began to cry. Some of the other monkeys tried unsuccessfully to pull the pot off his hand.
The boy and the man heard the noise. As the boy came near to the monkeys with a bag, the monkeys all ran away except the one with its hand in the pot. The boy packed the monkey and the pot into the bag. The man was surprised and asked the boy the secret of his monkey trap. “Why was it so easy for the monkey to get his hand in but so hard to get it out?”
The boy laughed and said, “The monkey could get his hand back out if he let go of the peanuts in the pot, but he just wasn’t willing to let go. They never are."

不久后有一些猴子发现了那个壶。其中一只把手伸进了壶里面并握住了一大把的花生，结果因为瓶颈太窄使它无法把手伸回出来。 那个猴子生气了并开始哭泣。其它的猴子们也无法帮它把它的手拔回出来。
那个男孩和男人听见了吵闹声。那个男孩带着一个袋子走近那群猴子的时候所有的猴子都跑开了，除了那只手卡在壶里面的猴子。那个男孩把那只猴子连同壶一起放进他的袋子里。那个男人觉得非常惊奇并问男孩关于他的陷阱的秘密：“为什么那只猴子那么容易就能把手伸进瓶子里但是却出不来呢？”
那男孩笑着说：“只要那只猴子放开壶里的花生就可以把手拿回出来了，但是它就是不愿意放手，永远不会。”
