Mainly located on the continent of North America, the United States is a federal republic country composed of 50 states, one capital districts and several oversea territories. With the area of around 9.6 million squared kilometers and over 300 million citizens, the United States is the fourth largest country in the world by landmass, and the thrid largest country by population.

The capital city of the United States is Washington D.C., which located on a river bank between states of Maryland and Virginia. The biggest city of the United States is New York City, which is also one of three global cities in the world. Other major cities in this country include Los Angeles, Boston, Houston, Chicago, San Diego, Miami, Denver, Philadelphia and Seattle.

The United States is a diverse country in terms of culture and geography. Although there are Native American tribes scattered across the land, most of this country's citizens are descendants of people from all over the world. It is a result of this nation's history. Before the United States was established, North America was colonized by European empires, such as England, France, Spain and Netherlands. Slaves were also shiped from Africa to North America. After the independent war, descendants of Europeans and African people became the first generation of the newly-established United States. Attracted by its freedom and the American Dreams, people from many other countries, such as Mexico, Brazil, China, Japan, Ireland, Poland and Germany, immigrated to the United States in 19th and 20th centuries. One of the major events that attracted a large wave of immigration was the 1849 Gold Rush in California. The United States welcomes all sorts of different cultures, and people living in this country can preserve their own cultures as much as they want. As a result, you can see cultures from different parts of the world within the boundary of the United States today.

In terms of geography, this country is also diverse. There are different geographical provinces in this country. New England, Mid Atlantic and Southwest are three provinces along the coast line of Atlantic Ocean. There are many financial or trading centers located in this area. To the west of them, there is a mountain range called Appalachia. This mountain is known for its rich natural gas and coal deposations, as well as peaceful villages in the woods. To the farther west, it comes the Great Lakes, Midwest and the Grand Plain. The area around Great Lakes is the old industrial and manufacturing center of the United States. There are many famous industrial cities, such as Pittsburgh, Youngstown, Detroit, Cincinnati and Cleveland. After 1970s, industries, especially the steel and coal industry, declined a lot in this area. Many furnaces and factories were closed down and abandoned. As a result, this area got a nickname of "Rust Belt". The Grand Plain was the home of agriculture in this country. Massive farms and fields distributed widely across the flat land. The western half of the United States is a mountainous region. There are four major ranges: Rocky Mountains, Serra Nevada, the Cascade Mountains and Coastal Ranges. Great Basins scattered amoung those mountains. In the western coast, there are small plains or valleys which were urbanized after the Gold Rush, and now they are high technology industrial parks that home a lot of international companies. The most popular one is the Silicon Valley near cities of San Francisco and San Jose.

After the World War I, the United States took the place of Bratain and became the most powerful country in the world. It has the best military strength, economic influences, cultural influences, educational resources and tourist resources. Wall Street of New Yorks city is considered as the financial capital of the world. Holleywood is known for great movies and Broadway is the most famous place for watching a musical show. The United States is the first country in the world to have national parks. There are more than 50 national parks in this country right now, and many of them, such as Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Great Smokey Mountains and Shenandoah, attracts millions of visitors every year. Besides national parks, there are many more hot tourist destinations in this country. For example, Las Vegas is one of the three most famous gambling towns in the world. Florida, Hawaii and Puerto Rico have world-class sunshines and beaches. Alaska is known for aurora and fjords. Plus, you can find tons of great museums of all kind in New York City and Washington D.C..

The United States have a good higher educational system. There are many world-class universities and institutes in this country. Not only do top schools like Harvard, Yale and Stanford help make the United States the leader in sciences and technology, but also they perform as moulders to shape world leaders in politics, researchs, arts and business. The United States is the birthplace of many music gernes, such as jazz, hip-pop, blues and country music. People living in the United States also love sports, especially football, ice hocky, baseball and basketball. Its national teams always have good performances in Olympic Games.
