Macao had returned to China as SAR in 1999. After that Macao has played a more and more important role in China.

First of all, we can get something from the history. Since Dec 12, 1999, Macao's Chief Executive Edmund Ho has paid official visits to about a dozen countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, and several foreign heads of state and ministers have visited Macao. That’s the first step for Macao to touch the rest of world under an official personality. And that’s the key to develop its own economy. The high frequency of exchanges between Macao and the rest of the world "was unimaginable in pre-handover days". What’s more, Macao can make contribution to our GDP part, by its special business operation.

Secondly, according to the Basic Law, the Macao SAR government can join international organizations or attend conferences, where statehood is required, as a member of the Chinese delegation or in a capacity - such as Macao, China - approved by the central government. That will expand the economic field in Macao, and it will do well for the local economy communication with the rest of world.
