There is 还是 There are?

（读者朋友们首先明白，there是个做不了句子主语的词，因此任何讨论主谓一致的问题都可以全然不顾there展开。详见 2.句子是什么？句子的成分 - 。there充其量不过是一个助词。）

请读者看如下两个句子：

1. There is an apple and a pear on the table.

2. There are an apple and a pear on the table.

笔者认为此处动词应是单数还是复数呢？

那便还要从主谓一致开始说起。英语中的句子都有主语和谓语动词（也就是所说的谓语，但事实上只是谓语动词而已，“谓语”应指的是句子中除去主语成分的其他一切。笔者此处权且将”谓语“和”动词“当作同义词使用）。此处两句的主语均为“an apple and a pear”，这应是毋庸置疑的，因此主语是个由and连接的复合主语，理应为复数（并非所有复合主语都是复数，如every boy and every girl，由于专横霸道的every存在，任何搭配均成了徒劳，这个词组按单数处理。这是主谓一致一个很怪诞的地方）。因此谓语应选择are。句子应为：

There are an apple and a pear on the table. 等同于：

An apple and a pear are (there) on the table.

但又有就近原则这一说。按照就近原则，there打头的句子，谓语应与与之最近的名词寻求一致。因此：

There is an apple and a pear on the table.

There is a pear and an apple on the table.

There are two apples and a pear on the table.

There are two apples on the table.

均符合此原则。

但不论如何看待，以下的句子均不可接受：

There is two apples and a pear on the table.

There is two apples on the table.

虽然得出的结论是原先的两个句子都正确，但笔者始终认为，用are是更加规则的选择。正因为当句子变成：

An apple and a pear are (there) on the table.

Two apples and a pear are (there) on the table.

A pear and two apples are (there) on the table.

就没有就近原则，一律采用are。

笔者的英语老师对此的态度是，当你想让读者把主语想象成一个整体时，就用动词单数，而想象成多个物体时，就用复数。因此这个事情很自由，完全可以由写句子的人的意愿决定。因此笔者不希望这类题目出现在英语考试当中，可能会给学生带来一种死记硬背的挫败感。
