托福barron上的一道阅读题，求英语达人解惑！！！

来自barron的test 1 的第三篇阅读，是一道指代题，由于我看不懂这句话的结构，所以做错了，求高手帮助
We now have ample evidence that the desirability of events affects adaptational outcomes more than the amounts of change that “they” require.
问题是划引号的they指代的是谁？答案是 events . 实在不理解。

要分清指代词究竟指代什么，一般都是向前找，而且通常情况下离指代词越近的越有可能。这整个句子里“that”后面是从句，修饰“edvidence”。这个从句里主语是“the desirability of events”，谓语是“affects”，后面adaptational outcomes和amounts of change是并别的成分。要找“they"指代的是什么就是要往前找一个复数的名词。这整个句子里面其实就只有events，amounts和outcomes。“that they require”本来就是定语从句，that是指代了amounts了所以they肯定不是修饰它的。outcomes本来是它的并列成分肯定也不是修饰它，所以they就是指代events了。如果你把句子看简单点看成“the desirability of events affects the amounts of change that they require”也许就好理解点了。
