1、 城市要素系统整合
将地上、地下空间综合考虑，使地下空间与地上空间形成完整的空间系统。并力求城市要素的相互渗透和有机整合，特别是地下与地上空间，地铁空间及居住区、交通、商业等要素系统的整合。
2、 自然生态综合组织
地下空间地面化，利用不规则天窗和丰富绿化、水景的下沉广场及地下空间让人们在地下也能充分接触自然，感受阳光，植物和空气，消除对地下空间陌生和压抑的心理，同时地下空间的导向感也得到了增强。
3、 历史文化保护
地区建设须做到更新中的延续、保护，既尊重现实又尊重历史，通过带状屋顶和曲折的内部空间设计体现了传统街巷空间特征；通过以保留的铁轨、站台、吊机为基础设计的景观建筑环境继承了数十年来的机车精神。整个设计体现文化的传承而新颖别致。
4、 以地铁换乘站为枢纽的原则
对跨越空中、地面、地下的地铁换乘空间进行人性化创新设计，让地铁换乘站成为人流和商业设施、服务及公共空间的联结纽带。

设计目标
1、改建集合村路以南原南京南站及利用集合村路以北老居民区地段建设跨地面层市民广场。
2、建立地铁1号线与8号线的换乘体系。组织有序的交通体系，以地铁站为中心组织过街人车系统，组织公共停车与地铁换乘。
3、结合地铁站构筑地下地上一体化的休闲、文化、商业空间。增强城市功能，改善城市环境，保障和创造城市安全、健康、舒适的空间环境。
作为中华门地区的标志性建筑，整个地铁站及周边部分公功能区域采用了大屋顶遮盖的方式，这样增强了公共空间的整体性和延续性。而大屋顶的形态须紧扣“门”的概念，成为南京“老城的南大门”。
