Now more and more Chinese children begin to learnforeign languages. In order to know a foreign language thoroughly, to graspfour skills perfectly are necessary. Firstly, we must be able to understand thelanguage when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak itourselves, correctly, with confidence and without hesitation. Thirdly we mustbe able to read the language and fourthly, we must be able to write it. We mustbe able to compose sentences that are grammatically correct. We must know howto arrange sentences in paragraphs, so as to write a good letter orcomposition.
There is no easy way to success in languagelearning. A good memory is of great help, but it is not enough simply tomemorize rules from a grammar book. It is not much use learning by heart longlists of words and their meanings. We must learn words not by ourselves, but insentences. We must learn by using the language. "Learn through use"is a good piece of advice for those who are studying a new language. Practiceis very very important. We must practise listening the fluent spoken language,reading aloud, speaking as fluently as foreigners and writing the language wheneverwe can.
