Sixteen years ago I learned "The Law of the Garbage Truck" in New York City.
I called a taxi and HEADED for Grand Central Station. We're driving well when ALL AT ONCE, a black car stopped jumped right in front of us. My taxi driver used his BRAKES, the tires made a loud noise, and AT THE LAST MINUTE our car stopped just one inch from the BACK of the other car.
I couldn't believe it. But what happened next really FRIGHTENED me. The driver of the other car, who ALMOST caused a big accident, turned his head around and started POURING bad words at us!
But then there's really BLEW ME AWAY: My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy.
"How so? He could have killed us!" I COMMENTED.
"Many people are like garbage TRUCKS. They run around full of garbage, full of DISAPPOINTMENT, and full of anger. As their garbage ACCUMULATES, they are looking for a place to dump it. And if you let them, they'll dump it on you."
"So one day when SOMEONE wants to dump on you, do not take it PERSONALLY. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. THEN you'll be happier."
These words left me deep in THOUGHT: how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And HOW OFTEN do I take their garbage and spread it to others? I began to see Garbage Trucks. I see the LOAD people are carrying. I see them coming to dump it. And LIKE my taxi driver, I don't take it personally. I just smile, wave and wish them well, and I move on.
