I wrote about how one night we were taken down the mountain and sent to a refugee camp.
It was there that we were told my mother was taken into a cellar and shot by the enemies for what they called disloyalty-the escape of her children.
But I did writer that I felt very lucky to have come to America, my mother’s dream for us. I ended my article by saying that, the coming of spring always reminded me of the green and golden day in 1948 when I last saw my mother.
I handed in my essay, hoping that was the end of it, but Miss Jones had it published in the school paper. Without telling me. Miss Jones also entered the essay in a national contest, and it won a medal.
For the first time I began to understand the power of the written words. Meanwhile, I followed the literary path Miss Jones had set me on.
I am always grateful to Miss Jones, the one who directed my grief and pain into writing ,the one that sent me into writing and indirectly caused all the good things that came after.
