One of the non-traditional type family is a single parent family. Before the 80s, the divorce rate is much lower than today. The static shown that the divorce rate in the 80s is about half of what today's, and it is increasing. Now, 1 in 4 child is raised in a single parent family. As a result, single parent family has became normal after 80's

Another type of family that has became normal is the same sex marriage family. Before 2003, same sex marriage is illegal in Canada. However, in 2005, the supreme court of canada has legalized same sex marriage, and canada became the fourth country in the world to recognize same sex marriage. With the legalization of same sexy marriage, a family consisted of two gay couples are now becoming normal.
