When Jane lived in England, an English man was so warm-hearted that he often helped her. Once she wanted to go shopping, he volunteered to be her guide. She was moved a lot and wanted to say thanks to him. So she said, “Thank you! Thank you!” He was too surprised to say any words. After a while, he seemed to understand her and laughed and said, “I can swim!” Suddenly she realized she had made a big mistake in her pronunciation. It was one of the funniest mistakes she had made in England. She pronounced “thank” into “sank” by mistake.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. An English friend of Jane’s was once in Paris. When a waiter wanted to serve her some more coffee, she said “Thank you” in French. She meant that she would like some more. However, to her surprise, the coffee pot was taken away! Later she found out that “Thank you” in French means “No, thank you”.
