Name of Movie:Fiddler on the Roof
Traditions in the Film
Though playing of film lasted three weeks, for which some of the scenes now seem dim, the father’s singing of traditions at the beginning and his repeated inner conflicts in the face of his children’s challenge to the traditional marital customs were still vivid in my mind.
There were several noticeable Jewish traditions portrayed in the film. The most prominent would be with their marriage. Theirs are a far cry from that of others even though they were gradually experiencing some variances. For example, those new couples engaged with each other had to find a recommender and acquire their parents’ approval. Compared with the dated traditions in China, the influence of feudal patriarchal system is transparent. All mankind love a lover. We all expect to see the marital fortunate of the beloved couples. Therefore it would be desirable for the young men and women to make their own choices, which has become so common nowadays that generally young all men benefit from it.
I also noticed the Jew’s queer gestures as of their association. When the Russian offered to shake hands with them, Jews would stick out a hand and just touch the other’s finger. This is surely part of their heritage and should be treasured. Keeping this custom does no harm to people of other nations, provided that they understand and respect each other.
One of the most impressive plots of the movie is the tailor’s wedding ceremony, which attracted me so much for its procedure and jollification. People dressed in their finest carried candles in the moon and bid greetings to the newlywed. Then came the time they gave various inviting performance companied with fabulous music. It is surprising that even the butcher came along with blessing and gifts. All the Jews there seemed to live in harmony. It seemed that whenever there was an event, they would get together and share the joy. This, in some sense demonstrates their simple and kind custom. Unlike the marriage permission custom, this one would be viewed as the fruits of their intelligence and creativity. It adds to the nation’s cultural heritage and also opens a door for the world to understand their people and their value better.
