Comparison with 2003 earthquake: Landslides triggered by the July 2009 Fiordland earthquake
were similar in type and size to those caused by other recent earthquakes in Fiordland, such
as the Mw 6.8 earthquake in 1993 (Van Dissen et al. 1994, Hancox et al. 2002), and the Mw
7.2 earthquake in August 2003 (Hancox et al. 2003, Reyners et al. 2003). However, the 2009
earthquake was unusual because the number of landslides was much less than those that
occurred during the 2003 earthquake. Landslides triggered by the 2009 earthquake affected
an area of ～5600 km2, compared to ～10,000 km2 affected by landslides in 2003 (Figure 5).

The 2009 landslides were also generally slightly smaller in size, and none had volumes
greater than ～100,000 m3 compared to at least 15 landslides of ～50,000–700,000 m3 in 2003
(Hancox et al. 2003). Many of the 2009 landslides were clearly reactivations (generally upslope
enlargements) of those that occurred in 2003 or earlier, as shown in Figure 4.
