The Berlin Wall is a special wall for German people, not only because it can recall the memory of the World War Ⅱ in people’s mind, but also because is has been the symbol of separation of people in one nation.
After the World War Ⅱ, in 1949, Germany was divided into 2 pieces - the East Germany and the West Germany. The East Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union, while the West Germany was controlled by some victors of World War Ⅱ and formed a federal republic.
The former capital city of Germany, Berlin, however, was deep located in East Germany, while half of Berlin was controlled by the same power as the West Germany. To prevent East-German people from moving to West-Germany zone, the government of East German build the Bolin Wall. They also cut off the telephone line, etc., which connected two parts of Berlin. The West Berlin was isolated.

During the period that the West Berlin was isolated, many people from East Berlin tried to climb over the wall to get into the West Berlin, but the failed.
