一个英语语法的问题请教大家，谢谢大家

The history of this franchise,although essential to the workings of democracy and the protection of individual rights,is a story of constant conflict.这句话我找出句子的主干了，就是两个逗号的两边，中间的是一个状语。可是我不明白的是，essential是一个形容词，他的前面我估计肯定省略了一个东西。我不知道省略的是什么，这是什么语法现象啊（告诉我名字就行，具体的我自己查）。谢谢大家啦
