Rich-poor gap

本文有两人在对话，Jessica (J) 和 Ken (K)。 他们在讨论贫富分化问题。

J：Hi, Ken. Did you guys receive an assignment on the gap between the rich and the poor in the world/

K：Yeah, so you guys have got it too. I think the growing gap is really scary!

J: Our teacher said that as well. He told us that if we don’t do something about it, the gap will grow bigger and bigger until all the wealth in the world becomes the property of a small group of people while the rest of the world starves.

K: I think you can already see this happening in countries such as India.

J: And the Middle East too.

K: The rich people there have expanses of estate, vaults of money and luxuries. While the poor are forced to cram into slums where they starve and die.

J: And they don’t have any adequate housing, clothing, transport, sanitation or medicine.

K: That’s right, and they are regarded as second class citizens. I doubt if they would get any respect from others.

J: And that would lead to the isolation of the poor. They cannot get help when they are in trouble because no one would want to be associated with them.

K: That is really a problem. And what’s worse is that the situation is just like a snowball effect. The rich can use the money and influence they already have to gain more money and influence.

J: And the poor don’t even have much of a chance to change their own fate because all the opportunities have been taken away by the rich.

K: That is correct, so the rich becomes richer and the poor becomes poorer.

J: We must remember that the resources in the world are limited and distributed unevenly.

K: So it’s just like the rich has taken the share that was intended for the poor.

J: That’s like what the teacher told us.

K: So the most effective way of reducing the gap between the rich and the poor would be to give the poor an opportunity.

J: I think that’s a very good suggestion.

K: Like giving them education and aiding them materially.

J: We had just donated clothes to India last week.

K: Okay, I got to go now. Let’s hope for the best for them.

J: Okay, bye.
