discuss, do sports games contribute more harm than good to our society?
upon mentioning sport, the impacts and influences caused by it and as a result to our daily lives can never be avoided without discussing. if it does not contribute as much as the disadvantages it brought upon us, why should it still be existing? as everybody knows, the ultimate aim whatever kind of sports games is supposed to be pure and healthy. if it could not affect our lives in a positive way, it certainly should not work the opposite. the beginning of the olympic games in ancient greek tells us that during the times of the game, peace, harmony, understanding and love were declared throughout the nations, and all city sent their sportsmen as their representatives to compete against one another in different kind of sports, and meanwhile to practice these believes in action.
in modern times too, we have olmpic games and a whole lot of international sport games which promote the same kind of ideas as the ancient greek, those are peace, harmony and understanding. in fact, this credo is believed among us for more than a few centuries, ostensibly, it has been carried out successfully, and it is true that even countries that were still at war with each other would participated in these games to show their respect and aspiration to the belief of harmony and understanding. at first sight, it seems that all these sport games are indulged in peacefully, not only that, it is also the professed aim of all sports and games that the organisers want to promote harmony and understanding. however, if we looked into our history, we would soon realise for most of the time, this does not happen.
taking the example of soccer. every time, when we decide to sit in front of the television and switch to the soccer channel or step into the crowded and noisy stadium and start to watch our desired soccer match, were we really admiring the amazing skills, teamworks or the well executed passes or shots shown by the players? before you could answer me, just think, imagine, what if the match is not played by the teams you are supporting, will you still care? and what if the team you are supporting had lost? what and how will you react to that? probably you will start to wonder by now 'how can these questions be related to the subject we are discussing?'. the truth is, majority of us do not just watch in peace, harmony and understanding, most often, some radical actions will be taken and carried out after the matches. usually these subsequent actions cause severe impact and sometimes may even affect the stability of the entire society. like james johnson said in his article of ‘does sport always contribute to international harmony?’, ‘to many people take sports to seriously, missing the enjoyment of a well executed play or the wonder of a well conditioned person and only seeing that it was not "their" team or athlete. some will try to actually interfere, throwing things on the field or shouting obscenities at the players, tryingto distract, disrupt the game rather than left players compete. when this happens between team from different countries, it creats international disharmony and discord.’
what he said can be interpreted that sports games can cause conflicts amontg nations. in fact, what james johnson said in his article was not an hypothesis, nor was it an assumption, such case did happen in south america before, a friendly soccer match between the nation of two eventually escalated into warfare. sadly to say, this incident was not the first one, neither would it be the last one. moreover, such cases do not just happen in soccer matches, other sports games like basketball, rugby also promote this rivalry among people and sometimes even harted between countries. even olympic games was once used as a tool by hitler to advocate his fascist ideology and promote his discrimating ideas against all the jewish.
on the other hand, we should not neglect the positive impact that these sports games have brought to us. we can exemplify it by looking at the beijing olympic games. more than hundred of countries with different races and colors of skin come to beijing to compete, to excel, to bring out the best ability of one's self to be faster, higher and stronger. this is the real sportsmanship that we all should advocate and promote.
all in all, it is true that sports games may have brought harms to our society to a certain degree, but generally, it still brings us more advantages than disadvantages to our society.
