斯托尔滕贝格表示，环境问题已经成为当今世界的共同问题，而中国对保护全球环境具有举足轻重的作用。

据其所知，中国人对于气候变化的重视要高于美国人。他表示，中国对保护全球环境起着举足轻重的作用，没有中国的参与，全球防止气候变暖的战斗便没有成功的希望。
有一学生问斯托尔滕贝格，“如果你是中国的领导人，将如何处理发展经济与环境保护的矛盾。”斯托尔滕贝格回应，首先他不是中国的领导人，但是促进经济发展不一定非要以牺牲环境为代价。
“如果我真的是中国的领导人”，那么“我就要到挪威去取经”，因为，挪威在环境治理方面有先进的经验和技术。此回答引得台下一片掌声。
