The major elements of culture that interest sociologists are the symbolic systems that make the communication of meaning possible; the beliefs of the culture, which provide the cognitive framework in terms of which we interact; the values, which define the things we think to be worth striving for; and the norms which provide the guidelines for behavior and regulate our interaction. Folkways are norms that specify polite or customary ways of behaving. Usually they are not stringently enforced.
