Former Zengcheng County with a history of over 1800 years was set up in the 6th year of Jianan, East Han (A.D. 201), subordinate to Nanhai Prefecture. Since Nanhai Prefecture had already governed 6 counties, another county together with a city was added, it was named “Zengcheng”, which means addition of another city. In 1993, it was changed from a county to a municipality with 6 towns and 3 subdistrict offices. Its capital lies at Licheng Town. It covers a total area of 1,741 square kilometers and has a population of 900,000. There are nearly 300,000 overseas Chinese in foreign countries and compatriots in Hong Kong and Macau. Zengcheng is located at the northeast part of the Pearl River Delta, in the east of Guangzhou, opposite to Dongguan on the south bank of the river, close to Huizhou on the east, neighboring Conghua, Longmen on the north, in the middle of Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, quite close to the Guangzhou Economic and Technologic Development Zone and Guangzhou Science City. There are developed industries, commerce and a large space for development. It is an important integral part of Guangzhou’s east block, a vital passage connecting Guangzhou with Dongguan, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and east part of Guangdong Province. In recent years, since great changes have taken place in Guangzhou, Zengcheng has become a winner of Guangzhou’s fast development.
