A Rare Fossil Record
The preservation of embryos and juveniles is a rate occurrence in the fossil
record. The tiny, delicate skeletons are usually scattered by scavengers or destroyed by weathering before they can be fossilized.
Ichthyosaurs had a higher chance of being preserved than did terrestrial creatures because, as marine animals, they tended to live in environments less subject to erosion. Still, their fossilization required a suite of factors: a slow rate of decay of soft tissues, little scavenging by other animals, a lack of swift
currents and waves to jumble and carry away small bones, and fairly rapid burial.
Given these factors, some areas have become a treasury of well
preserved ichthyosaur fossils. The deposits at Holzmaden, Germany, present an interesting case for analysis. The ichthyosaur remains are found in black, bituminous marine shales deposited about 190 million years ago. Over the years,
thousands of specimens of marine reptiles, fish and invertebrates have been
recovered from these rocks. The quality of preservation is outstanding, but
what is even more impressive is the number of ichthyosaur fossils containing preserved embryos.Ichthyosaurs with embryos have been reported from 6 different levels of the shale in a small area around Holzmaden, suggesting that a specific site was used by large numbers of ichthyosaurs repeatedly over time. The embryos are quite advanced in their physical development; their paddles,
for example, are already well formed. One specimen is even preserved in the
birth canal. In addition, the shale contains the remains of many newborns that are between 20 and 30 inches long.
Why are there so many pregnant females and young at Holzmaden when they
are so rare elsewhere? The quality of preservation is almost unmatched and
quarry operations have been carried out carefully with an awareness of the value of the fossils. But these factors do not account for the interesting
question of how there came to be such a concentration of pregnant ichthyosaurs in a particular place very close to their time of giving birth.
Skyscrapers and Environment
In the late 1960's, many people in North America turned their attention to environmental problems, and new steel-and-glass skyscrapers were widely
criticized.
Ecologists pointed out that a cluster of tall buildings in a city often overburdens public transportation and parking lot capacities.Skyscrapers are also lavish
consumers, and wasters, of electric power. In one recent year, the addition of 17 million square feet of skyscraper office space in New York City raised the peak daily demand for electricity by 120, 000 kilowatts -- enough to supply the entire city of Albany, New York, for a day.
Glass-walled skyscrapers can be especially wasteful. The heat loss (or gain)through a wall of half-inch plate glass is more than ten times that through a typical masonry wall filled with insulation board. To lessen the strain on heating and air-conditioning equipment, builders of skyscrapers have begun to use double-glazed panels of glass, and reflective glasses coated with silver or gold mirror films that reduce glare as well as heat gain. However, mirror-walled skyscrapers raise the temperature of the surrounding air and affect neighboring buildings.
Skyscrapers put a severe strain on a city's sanitation facilities, too. If fully occupied, the two World Trade Center towers in New York City would alone generate 2.25 million gallons of raw sewage each year -- as much as a city the size of Stanford, Connecticut, which has a population of more than 109, 000.

As we know, pollution does great harm to human beings.
It is very important to deal with the rubbish in cities. Rubbish should be treated properly.
With the development of agriculture and industry, more and more waste is produced.
Now more and more people have come to realize how serious this problem is.
Laws have been passed to protect our environment.
A large quantity of trees should be planted.
We must make good use of water and avoid polluting it.
Our government is doing its best to take measures to fight against pollution.
Something must be done to prevent factories from polluting the air.
In my opinion, the best solution to this problem is to carry out the system of praise and punishment firmly.
It is glorious to take care of the environments while it is shameful to pollute them.
It is generally agreed that civilized people should love and protect wild animals.
Thus more effective measures should be taken immediately to protect wild animals.
Only by this means can we stop the air from being polluted.
Only in this way can we enjoy fresh air and live a healthy life.
To protect ourselves, we must keep the balance of nature.
We should take good care of the forest and plant more trees instead of cutting down so as to improve our living conditions.

Saving Our City
Rubbish may cause a lot of environmental problems if it is not properly treated. It may pollute air and water. When people breathe the polluted air or drink the polluted water, they may get ill.
Our city is attaching great importance to dealing with the problem. For example, rubbish is sorted and sent to different places so that it can be treated differently. Some rubbish, such as paper and glass, is recycled, while harmful rubbish is buried deep to avoid environmental pollution. Waste water is made clean before it is poured into rivers. Besides, the government has passed laws to prevent people from throwing rubbish wherever they like.
As members of our society, we should have a strong sense of environmental protection and do whatever we can to fight against pollution.
Global Shortage of Fresh Water
Many people believe that the world’s supply of fresh water will never be used up .They think that fresh water comes from such a variety of sources that it is always sufficient for use .Such an opinion leads to a shocking waste of water.
As a matter of fact, the earth is short of fresh water. Furthermore ,with the rapid growth of the world’s population ,the rising demand for water by industry ,and the serious pollution of our surroundings ,the world is facing the danger of running out of fresh water .Actually ,in some big cities ,fresh water cannot meet the daily needs.
Therefore ,to find new ways to save water is an urgent task. First ,we should pass strict laws to control any waste of water. Second ,scientists must work even harder to purify sea water and polluted water ,and try to find substitutes to reduce the use of fresh water.

1) Solution of environmental problem we face now
The population concentration to urban area has caused continuous degradation of the national land, the city and the natural environment. For instance, there are a waste problem, a heat island, a noise problem, rural desolation and abuse of water resources. We need to solve these problems in the society and the environment with a long-term view especially in our country where rapid population reduction has occurred prior to the world.
As approaching the zero emission, the advanced resource-recycling society, we will make the most effective and synthetic plans and solutions possibly accepted by the society under various restrictions. And we will develop the technology and the system to realize them such as increase in efficiency of resources use, promotion of reproducible resources, construction of a durable energy system, construction and maintenance of the city. Besides, we will support aging society by effective use of space, development of the eco-friendly materials in construction and the eco-friendly construction method and so on.
2) Construction of safe and healthy environment of urban area
The earth scale change of climate has brought a new kind of natural disaster and the developed and complicated city system is holding a latent risk of expanding the damage artificially. Also people has been spoiling the health since the immense quantity of chemicals have been produced and already used in pursuit of convenience and various toxic substances have been produced unintentionally and accumulated in environment. Therefore, We need some countermeasures from the viewpoint to prevent the city environment form disaster and to manage environmental risks. So we will develop and improve a new risk management system and a disaster prevention system to preserve and create the city environment where people feel easy and sound in their life.
