The strike was a great victory for the workers. In July, 1889, the Second International under the leadership of Friedrich Engels held a congress in Paris. In order to commemorate the "5.1" strike conducted by American workers, to show the great power of "Workers of all countries,unite!", and to promote the struggle by international workers for eight-hour workdays, the congress passed a resolution which requied world labor to hold a march on May 1st, 1890, and also made May 1st the annual international labor's day, or May Day.
