forgetful 是一个单词。

It may not seem logical if you are parsing this as forget+table. But it makes plenty of sense if you consider the general rule: when adding a suffix beginning with a vowel, double the final consonant on the root word, if that syllable was short.
A good example is to compare these two cases:
can + ed = canned (short e)
cane + ed + caned (long e)
The doubled consonant is what keeps the preceding vowel short.
