But Mr. Nettleship, a former businessman, admits he isn't always a picture of health. He took up smoking when he served during World War II and continued the habit for decades when he returned home. But as he turned 50, Mr. Nettleship realized it was time to kick the habit.
"I heard somewhere that if you wanted to live for a long time, you had to stop smoking before you turned 50," he said, "So on my 50th birthday I threw my packet of cigarettes away." And he's never looked back.
"I've always believed in good health, good sleep and exercise," said Mr. Nettleship, who has two brothers aged in their 90s. "I love sports. I've always worked hard to stay fit and I think mental health is just as important as physical health."
Sadly, his wife died six months ago but he said their "wonderfully happy" 68 years of marriage together played a big part in his long life.
Mr. Nettleship tried his hand at tai chi at yesterday's Natural Health and Wellness Expo in Hobart. The slow and steady movements were quite different from the days when Mr. Nettleship did gymnastics. But he said it was important to have a go.
"I used to play a lot of sports but I wasn't always a champion," he said. "It's not just about whether you're the fastest runner. You've just got to stay healthy and have a positive attitude towards life."
