这一句是摘自Francis Bacon的《The Essays or Counsels, Moral, Economical and Political: With Elegant Sentences, Hints for Conversation and on the Choice of Good and Evil》(1817)一书的“Of Studies”一篇,原文有笔误,应作如下:
"For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one; but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs, come best, from those that are learned."
译文:
对于专家们,他们可以把具体细节逐一执行,也许作判断;
但至于一般的商议、策划以及编排事务,最佳人选是那些有学问的人。
这一句可作如下理解:
Those who are experts can execute and judge particular details on a one-by-one basis,
but learned men can give general advice/counsel, plan and coordinate affairs.
