To meet the needs of customers, firms must give their frontline workers (office clerks, front-desk people at hotels, salespeople, ect.) freedom to respond quickly to customer requests. This is called empowerment. Many businesses must reorganize to make their frontline people more effective than they are now. Many firms have formed cross-functional teams to allow people from various departments to work together. These teams have learned to work without close supervision; thus they are often called self-managed cross-functional teams. Companies that have formed self-managed teams will expect a lot more from their lower-level workers than they did in the past. Because they will have less management oversight, such workers will need more education. Furthermore, lower-level employees will need to receive higher pay and be treated more as partners in the firm. Increasingly, managers’ jobs will be to train, support, coach, and motivate lower-level employees. As many companies have discovered, it sometimes takes years to restructure an organization so that managers are willing to give up some of their authority and employees are willing to assume more responsibility.
In their rush to give customers what they want and need, managers must be careful that they cause minimal damage to the natural environment. Business and government leaders throughout the coming years will be discussing the issues such as the potential benefits and hazards of nuclear power, recycling, the management of forests, the ethical treatment of animals, and the protection of the air we breathe and water we drink. Environmentalism must not be a social cause of a few; it must be a major focus of everyone, and it’s becoming increasingly so.
