Say "hi" to talking elephant Kosik!
A 20-year-old male Asian elephant named Kosik is a star at a South Korean zoo because he can talk.Zookeepers say he can speak at least eight Korean words, including "sit," "no," "yes," and "lie down" in Korean.
How does Kosik make these sounds ? He puts his trunk in his muoth and shakes it while exhaling , just like how people whistle with fingers in their mouths.
Scientists say that through Kosik, they might be able to learn languages , although they say Kosik is unlikely to understand the meaning of the words he speaks.
According to his keeper Kim Jong-kap ,Kosik's pronunciation has improved a lot since 2006, when Kim first heard him talk. "At first, he made a simple sound, not any specific word. However, as time went by, he has speaking some words accurately."
For zo visiters, Kosik is a huge attraction. And for the scientists, the work ahead could break new ground ... just as long as they can keep Kosik talking.
