1、意思不同

“A number of”的意思是“若干”或“许多”，相当于 some，many 或 a lot of等。the number of表示“……的数量”。“The number of”的意思是“……的数量”或“……的数字”。

2、谓语动词不同

the number of 后面加可数名词复数，但是因为中心词是“数量”，也就是说主语是“the number”，所以后面的谓语动词要用三人称单数形式，the number of + 可数名词复数 +三单谓语。

a number of后面的谓语动词要用复数形式，a number of + 可数名词复数 + 复数谓语。

3、中心词不同

a number of+名词做主语时中心词是所加的名词；the number of+名词做主语时中心词是number。
