Some people don’t take thunder and lightning seriously, but lightning Can strike buildings and people and cause damage and injuries.You may not be aware, but each year, lightning kills about 75 to 100 people. That is more than people killed by hurricanes.
Scientists say that a person’s chances of being struck by lightning are 1 in 600,000. But you can reduce the chances by following these safety rules.
If you are indoors during a thunderstorm:
Avoid contact with anything that conduct electricity because lightning can come into the house through it.
Stay at least a few feet away from open windows and doors.
Don’t take a shower or bath because lightning can travel through water.
Avoid using regular telephones, except in an emergency. If lightning hits the telephone lines, it could flow to the phone. Cellphones or cordless phones, not connected to the building’s wiring, are safe to use.
If you are caught in a thunderstorm outdoors:
Go into a nearby building right away.
If there’s no building around, squat down near the ground and put your hands over your ears.
If you are in a car and it has a hard top, stay inside and keep the windows rolled up.
Do not shelter under a tree and avoid tall objects such as poles.
