Early in the morning, at noon, or in the evening, in big cities and in the countryside, you can see people running. Men and women, children and teenagers, middle-aged and old people are running. People run everywhere — along the beaches, through the parks, down the streets, or at the gymnasium. Some people even run in their living rooms.
A few years ago, running was not so popular. In the 1960s, when some people saw a runner, they would ask, “ Hey, what’s the hurry?” Or they might say to themselves, “ Is he all right?” Women almost never ran. If they did, they might hear a man shout, “If I catch you, can I keep you?” But today all this is changing. Today men and women of all ages enjoy running.
Many of us run for our health. Doctors say many of the health problems come from the following bad habits: eating too much, drinking too much, smoking cigarettes, and not exercising enough. Doctors tell us, “Eat less, don’t smoke, and exercise more.” Running is a good exercise because it helps build a strong heart. It also helps most people lose weight. One 68-year-old woman runs 3 times a week. “I love to eat,” she says. So she runs to lose weight.
Running is good for one’s health in other ways too. Many runners say running makes headaches and other small health problems go away. “Running is my doctor,” says one man. Running can also help people to relax. 展开
