It's hard to believe that 10 years ago, technology like Facebook and iPhones, along with infrastructure such as Eastlink, Clayton Community Centre and the Australian Synchrotron did not exist.

It shows how quickly new developments can become a mainstay in our daily lives. It also shows how important it is to plan for change to make sure you can make the best of new opportunities. As part of a new long-term strategy, the City of Monash is calling on residents to tell us how they would like to see the municipality prepare for the future.

In 20 years time, it is estimated that Monash will have an additional 15,000 people living in the city. More residents will be older. There will be more families and more people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Younger people will be working in jobs that have not been invented yet and the climate may be hotter and drier with more extreme weather events.
Having grown up in the City of Monash, Mayor Charlotte Baines said it was incredible to see how much the municipality had changed over the past few decades.

"When I was a young girl growing up in Mulgrave, Kingsway was pretty much a ghost town. Today it is a boom town, a bustling dining and entertainment precinct and one of the fast-growing Activity Centres in Melbourne," Cr Baines said.

"In order to plan for the future, we need feedback from all sections of the community so we can hold on to the things that the community values about Monash while being able to manage and the make the best of inevitable change."

"We want Monash to be a modern, vibrant and accessible place for residents today and tomorrow."

An initial series of workshops, involving around 70 community members and stakeholders, looked at topics such as changing demographics, community health, transport and parking, affects of climate change, development of the local economy and the impact of information technology.

Some of the ideas discussed included the need to retain Monash's green character while allowing more medium density housing so young families and older people could afford to stay in the City, transforming libraries into community hubs and maximising use of existing community and recreation facilities. Council was also urged to continue its own program of environmental initiatives while promoting and encouraging action in the community.

The current long-term strategy Monash 2012, created in 2002, is under review as part of this process. One of the visions of this plan was to improve existing community facilities leading to the development of the $24.2 million Clayton Community Centre along with other centres in Mulgrave and Ashwood.
