An oxyacetylene weld is produced by heating with a flame obtained from the combustion of oxygen and acetylene with or without the use of a filler metal.Most often the joint is heated to a state of fusion and as a rule no pressure is used.

A schematic sketch of a welding torch and its gas supply is shown in Figure 6.2. Gas pressures are controlled by regulating valves,and final adjustment is done manually at the torch.Regulation of the proportion of the two gases is extre mely important because the characteristics of the flame may vary.

The chemical reaction that occurs when acetylene and oxygen are burned in a neutral flame occurs in two stages ,one at the inner cone and at the outer envelope .

When there is an excess of acetylene used there is a decided change in the appearance of the flame.Three zones will be found instead of the two just described.Between the luminous cone and the outer envelope there is an intermediate,white-colored cone that has its length determined by the amount of excess acetylene.This flame,known as reducing or carburising flame,is used in the welding of Monel metal,nickel,certain alloy steels, and many of the nonferrous,hard surfacing materials.

If the torch is adjusted to give excess oxygen,a flame similar in appearance to the neutral flame is obtained except that the inner luminpus cone is much shorter and the outer envelope appears to have more color.This oxidizing flame may be used in fusion welding brass and bronze but is undesirable in other applications.

The advantages and uses of oxyacetylene welding are numerous.The equipment is comparatively inexpensive and requires little maintenance.It is portable and can be used with equal facility in the field and in the factory.With proper technique practically all metals can be welded and the equipment used for cutting as well as for welding.
