The British nationals have always enjoyed a double-edged status internationally.
On one hand, we have a free press that can operate without government interference, reporting events in the public interest. On the other, we have some of the most infamous tabloid papers in the world, notorious for their stretching of the truth and their obsession with celebrity, royalty and the so-called 'build them up and knock them down' philosophy.
Despite the introduction of a more rigorous code of practice, we still have a free press in Britain which means that there is no censorship of news, government interference or controlled licences that can be removed.
Anybody can publish a newspaper in Britain as long as they remain within the law. Nobody has the right to exclude the press from enquiries that are seen the serve the public interest. In practice this does not mean that our newspapers are free from bias, clearly the opposite is the case, with different papers showing allegiance to political parties and offering distinct opinion and specific views in most major current affairs.
However, what we do have is a variety of publications representing an array of political ideological positions. These positions are so well known that you may have heard people using stereotypes, such as 'liberal Guardian readers', 'Sun reader' or 'Daily Mail mentality'. In the case of The Sun it has been said that Tony Blair's greatest coup was The Sun switching sides. The Sun turned its back on John Major's Conservative Party after years of right-wing support for that party.
