Intheveryearlydaysoftheautomobile,adriverhadtobeastoutheartedfellowwhocaredlittlefort... In the very early days of the automobile,a driver had to be a stouthearted fellow who cared little for the opinions of his neighbors or for his own fate. That,at least, was the case in some sections of Pennsylvania.
A Clymer motor scrapbook in the central public library's collection or material on automobiles tells of "rules" and aims of the Farmer's Anti-automobile Society in Pennsylvania. On sundays, for instance, the rural auto haters were urged to "chase automobiles shouting and shooting at drivers and threatening them with arrest."
Those were the days, of course ,when there were far more horses than cars and the animals often got skittish in the presence of their rivals. One rule of the society stated that if a horse rufused to pass a car on the road,"the driver of the car must take the machine apart as rapidly as possible and conceal the palls in the bushes."
Two other rules were:
1."automobiles traveling on country roads at night must send up a rocket every mile, then wait ten minutes for the road to clear. The driver may then proceed with caution, blowing his horn and shooting off Roman candles as before."
2."if the driver of an automobile sees a team of horses approaching ,he is to stop, pull over to the side of the road ,and cover his machine with a blanket or dust cover which is painted or colored to blend into the scenery and thus render the machine less noticeable"
