It is true that volunteering takes up time, energy, and sometimes money.
It can be hard work. But it's great to get opportunities to experience new
things, even things that (when) may be challenging or even a little scary.

Sometimes you may think there are too many problems in the world, or even
in your community. You might even feel as if there were (is) (1) no point
trying to do anything, since you can't change the situation all by yourself.
Well, this is normal for young people. What I want to help (2) you so is
to look at the matter in another way. First, imagine you are sanding(3)
in a completely dark room without lamps or light switches. Then you light
a candle, creating a little or(3) light, and the darkness doesn't seem to
be so terrible as a result of your effort. Then, slowly, other people in
the room wide (4)you, until there are a hundred people with a hundred candles.
Now the room becomes (has become) bright, and the darkness has gone!

Volunteering is similar to this. One single person, like one candle, can
make a difference, and can inspire others to gather together and make an
even bigger difference. Every person is important, and every person can
do some good. Just remember that you are not alone, and that there are millions
of volunteers around the world.
Secondly, it can be doubly rewarding to find a volunteer position that involves
skills that we don't often use. This lets us gain experience, learn new
things, and improve ourselves! For example, if you are shy around strangers,
you can (could) think about volunteering with a group or team; this might
help you become more outgoing. In conclusion, volunteering can be really
worth the effort. So just have a try!
