There are many dragon legends in Britain, and there was probably a widespread belief in them at one time. Many of the dragons described are of the worm (wurm) variety, that is they have poisonous breath but no wings or arms to speak of. The Linton worm and the Lampton worm are two such dragons.

In the past phenomena such as shooting stars and other unexplained lights in the sky were identified as dragons, they were usually seen as ill omens.

One theory suggests that tales of dragons actually represent a belief in earth energy, especially when located to a specific area or landscape feature. An article by Richard Freeman from the Centre for Fortean Zoology explains another view of dragons.
