CONCLUSIONS
The successful introduction of GSM as a fully
evolving powerful system platform has been followed
by overwhelming market success, with the
result that GSM has become by far the dominant
second-generation radio-mobile telecommunications
system globally. Presently the evolution of
GSM exhibits the paradox of evolution: if something
evolves, it becomes different; that is, GSM
transforms into UMTS. UMTS aims at providing
global mobile personal multimedia services in a
convergent world, where the consumer will no
longer choose between delivery networks but
between the services that meet his needs.
The original vision of a single technology for
the third generation has transformed into the
goal to standardize a family of third-generation
mobile telecommunications systems allowing
deployment of networks depending on market
needs and operator business plans, with several
technological choices. Following an innovative
approach to globalize standardization, UMTS
standards are developed by 3GPP.
UMTS will benefit from the huge GSM footprint
worldwide. It combines the best of different
worlds: circuit switching for voice only
services and IP connectivity to bring IP-based
real-time multimedia communication services
and non-real-time multimedia information services
to the user on the move. UMTS technical
specifications mature within 3GPP in a timely
and efficient manner. They will form a sound
base for commercial take-off of UMTS as the
most mature third-generation standard in 2002.
Moreover, a base for future releases has already
been laid to keep on maturing according to market
requirements and enabling technologies.
