One Person Can Make a Difference
When a young Labor Supervisor named Bill Malone took over the reins as my counterpart for bargaining sessions, the relationship and work environment at Lordstown began to change. He was a man who kept his word. There were many occasions, I know for a fact, when he put his job on the line based on commitments that he had given us, whether they were written or verbal. With that kind of assurance, I felt comfortable in setting down and looking at solutions that benefited both the membership I represented and management. I knew what we agreed on would be carried out. Bill Malone, single-handedly, turned the relationship at our location from one of constant antagonism to one of cooperation and concern for workers and for the corporation that they worked for. He placed an emphasis on what was right in any given situation rather than on what could win or lose. In this environment of integrity and concern, it was easy to see how an individual in a position of leadership who is willing to objectively look at the rights of all concerned could make a real difference. Since then, I have seen many cases of individual leaders standing up for what is right rather than what is expedient, what benefited all involved parties rather than furthered a personal career. One person can make a radical difference in a situation that seems impossible.
