Since the government imposed a complete ban on smoking in bars effective July 1, 2009, some bar owners have complained they've lost up to 20 percent of their trade. But not everyone is hurting - not the ones who simply moved upstairs and out of sight. Timothy Chui reports.

Smokers, like their habit, are an obdurate lot, and they have proven resourceful in finding ways to beat the complete ban on burning tobacco in all public establishments.

The smoking ban has been a boon for upstairs operators with balconies or patios. It is not illegal to smoke outdoors, i.e., patios, so long as it is not enclosed on three sides, according to the law.
Opening his fourth floor Lan Kwai Fong establishment overlooking the Hong Kong Brew House a few months after the smoking ban's full implementation, Otto Lounge Director Rickesh Kishnani said his balcony was a big draw for patrons, with just over half his clientele sauntering out to light up over the course of their evening there.
