词汇是语言的基本单位,而语法是一种语言规范,在其约束下,词汇得以正确排列组合,从而构成语言。任何语言的习得都是从学习词汇开始的。英国著名语言学家D.A.Wilkins曾说过:“没有语法,人们不能表达很多东西,而没有词汇,人们则无法表达任何东西。”足见词汇的重要,而根据现在的一项调查表明大学生的词汇很贫乏,更不用说中学生了。这给许多学生在读文章时造成极大的困难,写作时错字连篇,词不达意,文章单调乏味。
词汇教学作为一个记忆成份较多的教学活动,容易让人感到厌烦和放弃,所以,在教学中必须认真考虑其教学策略和方法。词汇教学的好坏,不是由你教给学生多少词汇来衡量,而是由最终学生自己习得多少,以及由此能外扩的语言空间的大小来判断。不同的教学行为,给学生的外部刺激是不相同的,因而学生作出的反应的理解性和深刻性也是不相同的;不同的教学方式,其追求的目标也是不同的,因而其最终所达到的能力也是不同的;不同的词汇教学策略,带来教学方法的不同,因而也带来教学效率也不同。
