这个从句很长，先找到它的主句（主语+谓语）在很长的一串词后，是：a 5,000,000 yuan prize was awarded to him by the central government. （概括一下就是Sth. was awarded to him by sb.)
再将定语从句还原成正常语序，带两个空的句子：

如果觉得被动语态还不习惯，影响思维，就将它再还原成主动语态：

第二空，因为“他的”对。。。的贡献，不是因为 “他”，所以排除A，选C。
而对于不会还原定语从句，只凭感觉，只凭做题经验，不能分清句子结构的TX来说，选AB的诱惑是蛮大的。
