非语言交际是一个既古老又年轻的课题。说它古老，因为它的历史要比语言交际悠久地多。从人类发展史来看，人类语言的产生是在经历了相当长的劳动之后，而在这之前，人类如何进行交流，沟通信息呢？当然靠的是非语言手段。另外从一个人的成长史来看，一个人一般在一两岁之后开始呀呀学语，而他甚至还在娘胎里时就能以蹬腿作小动作等方式与母亲进行某种交流。因此可以说，什么时候有了人类，什么时候也就有了非语言交际。非语言交际又是一个年轻的课题，因为作为一门学科，非语言交际仅有40年左右的历史。二战之前的几十年里，这一领域的研究主要停留在有限的身体语言部分，不成系统。二战以后至五十年代，非语言交际研究有了质的飞跃，出现了几位对本学科的创立做出了杰出贡献的学者。如Bridwhistell的《体语学导论》（1952）与E.T.Hall的《无声的世界》（1959）均被视为开山之作。进入六七时年代，非语言交际研究更加深入，整个系统也更加完善。而国内学者开始大量介绍国外这一领域的研究成果并着手各自的研究则始于八十年代。据研究，国内最早以专著形式出版的非语言交际研究成果是耿二岭的《体态语概说》（1988）。胡文仲曾先后编写了几本书，如《跨文化交际与英语学习》（1988），《跨文化交际选读》（1990）《文化与交际》（1994）。还有邓炎昌的《语言与文化》（）等等。总之，到了今天尽管人类的语言系统已经高度发达，而且随着人类的进化，我们原来所具有的一些本能的非语言交际的能力反而退化了，但它仍然在我们的日常生活中起着举足轻重的作用。
