2.3.4 Modes of Cracking due to Steel Expansion
When steel expansion due to corrosion occurs, a crack can propagate and, finally, the crack can be visible from outside of concrete [Matsushima 2002]. The time for the first crack to occur with the width less than 0.05mm, can be predicted using the formula developed by Liu [1996]. However, in general, the critical crack, which may be greater than 0.3mm, needs ten times longer period than the time required for the first cracking [Val and Stewart 2003]. This concept can be expressed as follows:
