Considering only warehousing operation costs, there are considerable differences between all three products. This study described above represents the ®rst step in the implementation of ABC costing by a third party logistic operator. As the project progressed a lot of information had to be collected purposely or estimated by a model or by informed guess. So, the ®rst bene®t of the exercise was to identify the information that must be collected routinely to feed the system. It is worth stressing that except for overheads there will be very little additional effort involved in the collection of the necessary information. It is simply a matter of collecting it in the appropriate format. For instance, for the permanent ¯eet, in spite of the large amount of detailed information available it was extremely dif®cult to determine the number of clients visited on any one route. In future, this information will be collected daily at no extra cost.
