民间传说：古时，有怪兽名曰“年”，形若狮子而独角。定时出现伤害人畜，人们苦无制服之法。一次，“年”闯入某村，巧遇穿红衣，燃竹竿取暖者，“噼拍”爆炸有声，红光闪耀，“年”惊窜奔逃。于是人们认识“年”性，每逢“年”出时，家家户户闭门家居，贴红联，燃爆竹以驱“年”。“年”果不再来。人们庆幸过了“年关”，敲锣打鼓，互称“恭喜”，从此有了“过年”。

As an old saying goes : Years ago ,there was a beast named " Nian" ,which looked like a lion with a horn . This beast always hurt men or livestock which annoyed people. Once , the" Nian"
broke into a country , happening to meet someone in red who lit bamboo to get warm. The pitter-patter of the borning bamboo scared the beast away. After that ,people knew what the beast scared about. At each time the beast appeared , all of people there stayed indoors , putting up couplets at their gates and lit firecrackers to drove " Nian" away. Since then, the beast didn't turn up any more. That is the origin of "Chinese traditional new year".
