Leaders impact our daily lives and futures. In good and bad times, there is always a need in strong leadership. Leadership is being defined as the position or function of a leader. however in my opinion, leadership is a quality, tough to define, it is a trait that you’ll able to distinguish whether a person has “it” or not.
John was in the Boy Scouts for only six months. He was shocked when he was being appointed the group leader in the Boy Scouts. He protested saying that he was not qualified for the role, but the Scoutmaster voiced their confidence so John accept the appointment, although doubted his ability.
He had eight boys under his command. Firstly he chose Li Min as his assistant. The other team members were all from the same grade in school, some wer his classmates. They were friends and no one gave anyone orders. Now as a team leader, John had to give orders to his friends. It was not something he relished but it was inevitable. There were times when he had to make difficult decisions and give unpleasant orders to his charges, but he managed to do them with minimal fuss.
Once, at a weekend camp, Yang Kang a team member, accidentally stepped into a hole and broke his ankle, while he was looking for firewood outside the camping area with Tom. Yang Kang could not walk and Tom rush back to camp to inform John.
John and the rest of the team hurried to the incident site. Yang Kang was in great pain. Working quickly John put a splint onto Yang Kang's ankle to immobilise it. He gave orders to the orders to make a stretcher. When they reached camp, they informed the Scoutmaster who then called an ambulance from his handphone. Before long Yang Kang was on his way to the hospital.
The Scoutmaster praised John and his team members for handling the situation well. John was glad that he played his part competently, he had also learned something about the responsibility of being a leader.
The above story showed us that a leader possessed the following characteristics. First of all, able to take up a challenge, delegates jobs, able to make the appropriate decisions and be firmed when he has too, able to remained clam in a emergency situation for team mates to look up to, and has a sense of responsibilities for the team.
