这里为什么不能说of the members had shaved

这里括号处答案是resulted not from obstinacy,but from a determination
为什么不能说was not obsinate but determined.不是说SAT不喜欢抽象名词吗

1. 句子主干是： The shift ...is occurring because..., 意思是“。。。的变化正在发生，因为。。。”
如果不表示“发生”这层意思，只说“。。。的变化是由于。。。”，那么英语应该用 The shift...is due to....,（后接名词短语）， 或The shift...is due to the fact that... (后街从句)
此处就不能用because了，因此该词是个主从连词，连接主从复合句，具体说来就是引出原因状语从句。如果直接说 the shift...is because...，那么because 引出表语从句了！
2. shaving) several seconds off her own best time.是members的后置定语。 如果用had shaved，那么其前还应该加上关系代词 who，这用members 一词后就是定语从句。
3. determined 一词的意思是有决心的，用来修饰或说明人，即人有决心；不用于修饰或说明insistence 之类的抽象名词，不能说insistence有决心。但是说the insistence is a determination是可以的，意思是“坚持是一种决心”。
